South Dakota is a living, breathing American textbook that you can walk into; from stories and the preservation of the American frontier life to wildlife you can see from the comfort of your car. There is no shortage of historical context living within its state lines.

With a Best Western to call home base, here are several must-sees in South Dakota to add to your itinerary:

Go into town

Deadwood

Deadwood has been attracting guests since 1874 when gold was discovered in the Black Hills. Guests included outlaws, gamblers and gunslingers like Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Potato Creek Johnny and Seth Bullock, to name a few. Though they have been long gone, their presence in Deadwood remains. Experience its rich history with reenactments and museum artifacts, but don’t forget to enjoy Deadwood’s modern offerings from breweries, escape rooms and more.

Spearfish

Spearfish is perfect for those weekend getaways with the great outdoors a short distance away and plenty of in-town activities to enjoy. Take a hike to Bridal Veil Falls, pay a visit to Devils Tower or have some family time at Brady Park. If the outdoors aren’t for you, experience downtown with its delicious eateries, local shops and endless entertainment.

De Smet

See what prairie life was all about when you visit De Smet. Memorialized by Laura Ingalls Wilder, author and inspiration for the Little House on the Prairie series, guests may immerse themselves in the history of De Smet. Visit the Ingalls Homestead, walk down Main Street where original buildings still stand and participate in activities that De Smet’s founding residents once took part in.

Get outside

Badlands National Park

Layered rock formations, steep canyons and towering spires make up this national park. Bison, bighorn sheep and prairie dogs are just some of the locals you can find here. As wondrous as it is to see all that lives in the Badlands, it’s also known for the fossils it homes that show the life that once wandered the area, from three-toed horses to saber-toothed cats.

Custer State Park

Known for its bison herds, historic sites, fishing lakes and scenic drives, Custer State Park is 71,000 acres in the Black Hills. Take a drive and easily spot wildlife from your car or take up a recreational activity on the lake. With great views and endless activities to match, there is something for everyone.

Missouri River

The longest river in North America, the Missouri River flows for over 2,000 miles from Montana to Missouri. In South Dakota, visitors can enjoy Mighty Mo’ in four sections and reservoirs – Lake Oahe, Lake Sharpe, Lake Francis Case and Lewis & Clark Lake.

Things to do

Mount Rushmore National Memorial

The state’s biggest draw is Mount Rushmore National Park, something you have to see in person. Called “America’s Shrine of Democracy,” the area offers more than just the miraculous rock carving; in fact, guests can take a ranger tour, tour the sculptor’s studio and see wildlife. Of course, you can’t leave without taking a photo with the 60-foot memorial.

Falls Park

Pay a visit to Sioux Falls, even if it’s only to visit Falls Park. This 123-acre park downtown has various viewing points, observation towers, a café and much more. Learn more about the town’s history, all while enjoying the beautiful outdoor scenery that has been well preserved around the growing city.  Whether it’s a morning stroll with a coffee in hand or a lunchtime picnic along the Big Sioux River, there is no wrong way to enjoy Falls Park.
