“The Best Western Plus Tin Wis Resort is more than just a hotel, it is a legacy for the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations, it will change the idea of the past and be something that can be remembered more positively for our people and for the future generation,” says a current employee of Best Western Plus Tin Wis Resort. She continues, “Guests are usually overwhelmed with [the resort’s] beauty and the nature quite often; the seclusion of Tofino, the politeness, there’s a different lifestyle here. They appreciate that and feel a sense of calmness. There’s no sense of time, no sense of rushing, everything’s laidback. [Guests] are usually very appreciative, and they thank us quite often for sharing our space.”

Tin Wis literally means “calm waters”, and the Best Western Plus Tin Wis Resort is proudly owned by the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations. Located on Mackenzie Beach off British Columbia’s Clayoquot Sound, outdoor lovers can immerse themselves in the beauty of nature while learning about the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations culture.

In March 2023, guests will be able to immerse themselves further with a new event series titled “naaʔuu”. Named after a Nuu-chah-nulth word that translates to “come together” and “feast”, and the name appropriately describes the delicious, traditional coastal dinner that will be prepared by Chef Ian Riddick.

The Best Western Plus Tin Wis Resort is the perfect place to host the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation event. General Manager, Jared Beaton, expresses his excitement, “We are proudly owned by Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, and this event series will take place at the Best Western Plus Tin Wis Resort inside a hand-crafted longhouse, and will include real authentic indigenous food, plus singing and dancing. We are most excited to offer our guests and local community a memorable and meaningful indigenous experience,” Beaton says.

The Best Western Plus Tin Wis Resort’s conference centre will be transformed to look and feel like a traditional bighouse, and will include an art show where local artists will showcase their works.

“We are excited to welcome you into our house, to share a little bit of who we are, in our own words,” expresses naaʔuu Co-Producer Hjalmer Wenstob. “Come share a meal and bear witness to our powerful singers, dancers and transformative masks and artworks. This is a nation rich in beautiful art and culture in one of the most stunning places in the world.”
