Truckee, California is undoubtedly one of the most charming, beautiful mountain towns in Northern California, with snowcapped mountains and towering firs, pines and juniper trees that inhabit the Tahoe National Forest, plus its convenient location to Lake Tahoe and Donner Lake, makes it ideal for outdoor recreation and outdoor activities. As one of the premier charming mountain towns to visit, the landscape is simply breathtaking in the winter, but stunning year-round. Originally inhabited by the Washoe, Maidu, and Paiute tribes, then later, evolving into a mining town in the late 1800s, to the charming mountain town it is today, Truckee is rich with history and beauty that you need to explore.

Embrace Winter Sports & Activities

Like living in snow globe, Truckee doesn’t have to do much to shake things up. The winter wonderland has the perfect conditions for skiing and snowboarding. If you love the powder but want an activity more low-key, try snow tubes at Tahoe Donner Snowplay or ice skating at the Truckee Ice Skating Rink.

Explore Downtown Truckee

Downtown Truckee is the heart of the community, with quaint, cozy shops and restaurants lining Donner Street, it’s easy to get lost in the charm of the small town. Make sure to make a stop at Truckee Tavern, a local favorite. Climb the stairs to the second floor and set your snow gear aside at the door, to warm up with cocktails drawing inspiration from the bootlegging prohibition era, and dining on wood-fired entrees that are local sourced. Truckee Tavern has all the meats, from pork chop to hanger steak to ½ lb. cheeseburgers.

Enjoy pieces of Truckee history

The Old Truckee Jail Museum is a piece of Truckee history, as it is one of the few surviving Truckee original buildings built in the late 1800s. Learn about the first prisoner, William Hart, who was jailed for a nasty brawl in 1875. Or, explore the Truckee Railroad Museum, which used to be a stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad, a popular route from the 1950’s to the 1980’s. See railroad artifacts, a real caboose, and even a Thomas the Tank Engine train set.
