  • Great River Road

Extending nearly 700 miles along the Mississippi River from Twin Cities, Minnesota to Venice, Louisiana, the Great River Road truly lives up to its name. There’s a whole lot to see and do along this gorgeous path, and its northernmost segment in Minnesota and Wisconsin is no exception.

Majestic eagles, cozy villages, and much more — come with us as we journey down the Great River Road. We’ve scoped the route, and think you’ll love these five memorable stops in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Stop #1: Mississippi Gorge Regional Park (Minneapolis, MN)

We’ve got a long drive ahead of us, so start by getting your wiggles out in the Twin Cities. Mississippi Gorge Regional Park has all types of fun outdoor activities spanning its beautiful 132 acres, like canoeing, river cruises, and dog parks. The river is flanked on each side by hardwood forests on steep bluffs, so get your cameras ready.

Stop #2: The World’s Largest Boot (Red Wing, MN)

The beautiful riverside town of Red Wing is also the namesake of the legendary boot company. Of course, make sure you tour the Red Wing Shoes factory while you’re here. You can see how their shoes get made, and marvel at the world’s largest boot, a size 638 ½ that’s 20 feet long and 16 feet high! (Each eyelet weighs 4 lbs.) There’s a lot else to see in the town, too, like the architecture along historic Main Street, much of which was built in the 1850s.

Stop #3: National Eagle Center (Wabash, MN)

Do you like eagles? Then you’ll love the National Eagle Center. Hundreds of Bald and Golden Eagles nest here during the winter, and from October through April visitors can embark on habitat tours and river cruises. Guided by expert naturalists, these tours will teach you all about eagle biology and behaviors. There’s something so special about watching these birds soar above the Upper Mississippi River Valley.

Stop #4: Shopping in Stockholm (Stockholm, WI)

Is this place for real? Yes. Yes, it is. From art galleries to wineries to antique shops, Stockholm is the quintessential cozy Midwestern village. (Their official motto is “Small Village, Big HeART.”) Seriously, you could spend all day wandering the picturesque shops in central Stockholm.

Elsewhere throughout the village, though, you’ll also enjoy astounding views of the rolling hills and nearby Lake Pepin.

Stop #5: Brews to End Your Journey (Potosi, WI)

Potosi bills itself as “beer’s hometown,” and they’ve got the credentials. The town is home to one of Wisconsin’s oldest breweries, Potosi Brewing Company, which was founded all the way back in 1852. Fittingly, the spot also hosts the National Brewery Museum. Here you’ll find a unique array of bottles, cans, glasses, trays, coasters, advertising materials, and other collectibles. Let’s raise a glass to a trip well-traveled!
